Nowadays, our society and our world are moving, growing, blossoming, transforming itself and, for some people, destroying itself completely.
Some jobs are disappearing while others are apearing. Thus, some people are pleased with it and some other suffer from it. Supply and demand are overlapping.
A little history never hurts: we have to teach the youngest what the eldest remember as it it were yesterday (with a bit of nostalgia).
Here is a short list of the lines of work which completely disappeared because of society evolution.
1. Street Lamp Lighters.
The lamplighter would light the street lights, when they were not yet functionning with electricity nor gas. This professional walked the streets of his area to light up the lamps. And in the morning, he was charged to turn off these street lamps with a bell that smothered the flames.
She would take care of carrying the clothes to the drum or wash the clothes in her laundry shop. She would beat it, make it dry, then smooth it with the « pattemouille », the ancestor of the iron.
Before 1981, the date of the abolition of the death penalty in France, the executioners were quite numerous, all the more so during the French revolution, when the guillotine worked relentlessly.
When TV or radio did not exist, how was the news announced? Via the street crier! Indeed, very few people could read the gazettes…
7. Phone Lady.
These « damsels », necessarily single and irreproachable, could link communications.
He worked in the mines.
9. Ticket Puncher.
His job was to punch the subway tickets, when automatic turnstiles did not exist yet.
He was responsible for taking the messages and translating them into codes that passed by cables.
Finally, today all these trades have been removed and replaced. However, it is not by other trades but by new technologies.
